Imo it comes from the male need for paternity certainty. I have answered a few questions about this on Quora.

But I’ve also made fun of the biology argument because:

  1. If a man is promiscuous, that signals that he is more likely to abandon a woman and her child. The worst case here is death.
  2. If a woman is promiscuous, that signals that she may sleep with other men and the man may end up contributing resources to a child not his own. The worst case here is wasted resources.

Which is worse? It seems like biologically it is women who should have the biggest aversion to male sluttiness unless said male has shown that he sticks around and supports multiple women.

Another thing funny to think about is the argument that it’s all about ensuring paternity when clearly humans are fine with adopting and raising the children of others. Humans are social/communal creatures. So it’s not just about ensuring survival of your offspring. It’s often about ensuring survival of the group. Or it would have been in hunter gatherer societies. Right?
