Medscape Coverage of Labiaplasty, Clitoral Hood Reduction

Risks to sexual function not discussed, surgical anatomy omitted, function of labia minora unacknowledged, use of “rejuvenate” is medical fraud, claims of causes of hypertrophy also unsupported, fraudulent.

Medscape claims labiaplasty is a procedure that “rejuvenates” the female genitalia. Yet there is no evidence of any positive correlation between age and labia minora size after puberty. Meanwhile, labia minoa are well known to shrink with menopause. Claims that labiaplasty is “rejuvenating” are fraudulent and misleading.

Most of Medscape’s claims regarding causes of labia minora hypertrophy are not supported by any evidence. The claim that sexual intercourse can cause hypertrophy is unsupported and fraudulent.

“Relevant Anatomy” to labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction includes only surface anatomy. No surgical anatomy of the vulva is shown or described. Nerves put at risk are entirely omitted.

Complete amputation of the labia minora, dorsal clitoral nerve injuries, and loss of sexual sensation are all complications of clitoral hood reductions and labiaplasties. They go completely unementioned.

Claims of improved sexual function are misleading given sexual dysfunction in women seeking labiaplasty is caused by psychological distress associated with poor genital self image. Risks to sexual function are not addressed. The number of patients who report losses to sexual function is not mentioned.
