The problem is expert status can blind people to areas where they may actually not know what they think they know. They defend the status quo at all costs. Whatever their expert opinion is cannot be questioned, even if it’s clearly, provably false.
You also see a lot of “herding” and group-think among “experts.” They all don’t know what they don’t know. But they think they know, and they support each other in their stubborn ignorance. If there is an error in what they think they know, it’s actually easier to get an outsider to see it.
