Women dress for men. However, the incentive mechanism is so indirect they sometimes do not realize that’s why they are doing it. It works like this:
Female attractiveness is valued by men and men are (especially have been in past) dominant gender with more power and resources. >>> Female attractiveness is of high social value and is especially necessary if they are not as self sufficient (historical reality). >>> Women learn to value themselves and each other based on attractiveness. >>> Women wear clothes that make them feel prettier and they compliment other women who look pretty, based on this value system. >>> Women think they are dressing for themselves and other females, but the fundamental incentive derives from male preference for attractive women.
Clothes serve to enhance female attractiveness + women valuing themselves based on appearance = choosing to wear clothes to augment appearance.
As women gain more power in society, women choose mates more based on attractiveness than power/resources >>> male attractiveness becomes more valued >>> men make more effort to work out and dress well >>> YAAS
